Well, I survived, and in reasonably good condition. The anaethetist, it turns out, was formerly a fellow at Bristol and very anglophilic, and the surgeon himself was also very friendly. The operation seems to have been a success, though the next week will be crucial regarding survival or otherwise of the skin graft.
